How to Switch from Paper to Reusable Notepads

Here we look at; The Cost of Paper Notepads; Introducing Reusable Notepads; and The Amazing RocketBook Notepads and Beacons. This is one of over 40 ideas in our Sustainability Roadmap with Solutions to Climate Change, and part of our series on Living Sustainably.

If you already know why it’s important to reduce consumption and waste to help stop climate change, here are the options to switch to reusable notepads:

  2. RocketBook Beacons to digitise your whiteboard*

If you want some more facts before making any decisions, let’s get into the details:

I’ve created a lot of waste! We all have.

Even though I’m very much a ‘digital’ person, I still like to write things down. I like to get my thoughts and priorities and notes into the physical world. But, making physical notes means using paper and that means creating more consumption, more waste, and more recycling. Until now.

I’ve been on a journey, on a mission, to help our future by helping climate change. I’m still on that mission. I’m still on my journey to find ways to grow, eat, and live in a way that can be sustained forever.

Just before I started Nafford Junction, I discovered a way to swap from paper that gets thrown in the bin or, at best, recycled, to a reusable notepad that lasts forever.

The Cost of Paper Notepads

I’ve bought a lot of notepads in the past. Either for myself or for the companies I’ve worked for.

A quick search on Amazon and I can see an A5 Pukka Pad costs £6.47 and a pack of 4 x A4 Pukka Pads costs £13.95. Sure, you can spend wildly different amounts on paper notepads, but, whatever you buy, notepads cost money.

Imagine the amount of money spent on paper notepads. Paper notepads just to make notes that, ultimately, get thrown in the bin to end up in landfill, or sent to be recycled.

Recycling might feel like a good thing to do. It’s certainly better than landfill, but it’s not a solution. Having the security of ‘recycling’ doesn’t reduce our consumption. And, sending something to be recycled doesn’t always mean it gets recycled.

The UK stats on waste show that only 65.6% of paper gets recycled. I have no idea what the stats are for paper from notepads, but it’s important to know that putting things into recycling isn’t a solution. It just becomes somebody else’s problem to sort, recycle what can be recycled then send the rest to landfill or to be burnt.

And, it only becomes somebody else’s problem to sort out. We’re still the ones left with the financial problem. The financial problem of paying for waste and recycling to be collected, sorted, and processed.

Instead of spending money over and over again on paper notepads, switching to reusable notepads becomes a one-off purchase, and feels like a real solution. Job done.

Introducing Reusable Notepads

Luckily, the amazing people at RocketBook* have come up with reusable notepads.

Here’s a Quick Video to Show You How It Works:

The reusable notepad looks just like a paper notepad.

  1. It has 32 pages
  2. You use a regular(ish) pen (a Pilot FriXion)
  3. You write or draw as normal
  4. When you’re ready to get rid of what you’ve created
  5. Just dampen the cleaning cloth, and wipe the pages clean
  6. Pages dry super fast, and you can start writing and drawing again

You can even use the mobile app to take a picture of your pages to send what you created as an email attachment or to be saved to Google Drive, Dropbox, iCloud, or Evernote.

You Can Even Digitise Your Whiteboard

I love these. They’re the RocketBook Beacons*

  1. Just place the Beacons in the corners of your whiteboard
  2. Use the whiteboard as normal
  3. Use the RocketBook mobile app to scan the whiteboard
  4. and send a picture by email or to your cloud storage

You can even cast your whiteboard by setting up your mobile in a fixed position so the app can keep scanning your whiteboard to update to live cast.

It’s not fully live, just almost live as it’s updated every few seconds.

What I recommend is to use Google Meet* or Zoom for your online meeting then share your screen to show the whiteboard live cast. You can learn more here about using Google Meet as part of Google Workspace*.
