Here we look at; Homemade Takes Some Planning; and Collecting and Storing Used Bottles and Jars. This is one of over 40 ideas in our Sustainability Roadmap with Solutions to Climate Change, and part of our series on Eating Sustainably.
If you already know you want to start making things at home, here is the option to get a decent collection of bottles and jars to reuse:
- Let family and friends know what you would like them to save
If you want some more facts before making any decisions, let’s get into the details:
This is the first piece looking at homemade things.
For me, homemade is about being more self-sufficient. Self-sufficiency isn’t just about doing one thing yourself. It’s a lifestyle choice. A lifestyle that’s about consuming and wasting less, helping climate change, and growing, eating, and living sustainably.
Making things at home has made me appreciate the value of food, drinks, and products, because I’ve put in the effort to find or produce the right ingredients then take the time to create whenever it is I’m creating.
If it’s something I make, I don’t just pop to the shop and buy it whenever I want. I do my best to be conscious of what I’m consuming. To be as seasonal as possible.
Homemade things for me are natural live yoghurt, home cured bacon, sausages, soap, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, beer, wine (I love this the most because it gets me as close to self-sufficient as possible by foraging the main ingredients), bread, cakes, jam, chutney, loads of things.
Homemade Takes Some Planning
Making anything at home takes a bit of planning. That’s not to say it needs to take a long time. I could decide to make something like oat bars or shampoo and I can get that done in minutes because I keep the ingredients in stock.
Some of the things that can take some planning, and can save a lot of money, are bottles, jars, and containers. Buying them can get expensive.
Collecting and Storing Used Bottles and Jars
I have a spot in the loft where I keep a load of bottles and jars so I have lots of different ones ready to use. Then all I need to do is wash or sterilise them before they’re used.
To keep a good amount in stock, I just let some of my family know that I’d love to save any of their used bottles and jars, and then get saving.
I also collect egg shells and bones then roast them and crush them to be added to the compost heap, but we’ll keep that for another piece.
That’s it. Tip number one to prepare to make homemade things is to start collecting used bottles and jars.
