Save Water by Watering the Plants with a Watering Can and Rainwater

Save Water by Watering the Plants with a Watering Can and Rainwater to help climate change

Here we look at; Watering the Plants by Capturing Rainwater and Using a Watering Can. This is one of over 40 ideas in our Sustainability Roadmap with Solutions to Climate Change, and part of our series on Growing Sustainably.

If you already know you want to save water by using a watering can and rainwater instead of water from the tap and the garden hose, here are the options to get setup:

  1. Find water butts on Facebook Marketplace
  2. Find water butts on Gumtree
  3. Find watering cans on Facebook Marketplace
  4. Find watering cans on Gumtree

If you want some more facts before making any decisions, let’s get into the details:

A running tap wastes approximately 6 litres of cleaned and sterilised water, every minute!

We already looked at saving water by not flushing after every wee.

Another water saving tip is switching from using the garden hose to capturing rainwater.

Watering the Plants with Rainwater

If you have access to a drainpipe that takes water from the roof then you have access to a lot of free water.

It’s usually easy to find second hand water butts on Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree, for free or for a small amount of money. Just keep an eye out and be ready to go and collect.

You might need to make a few adjustments to the drain pipe to get it going into the waterbutt.

You’ll also want to have an overflow so that when there’s too much water in the waterbutt, it will overflow into the drain.

It’s best to get the waterbutt, take some pictures of where it will go, and measure the diameter of the drain pipe. Take that information to your local hardware or DIY shop, and they can help you to buy the bits and pieces that you need.

If you have the space, you can set up multiple waterbutts.

You’ll be surprised at how much free rainwater can be captured. All free, and all without chlorine (if you let the water sit for a while after it’s rained) and all without the cost, pollution, and energy consumption associated with sterilised and cleaned tap water.

Using a Watering Can to Water the Plants

Getting a watering can is also super easy.

I would also keep an eye out for watering cans on Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree, for free or for a small amount of money. Just keep an eye out and be ready to go and collect.

You’ll want to get a watering can with a rose (like a shower head that goes on the spout of the watering can) so that you get a nice fine spray when you’re watering the plants or grass.
